Dear Reader,
spring has arrived. And we are happy to annouce the first
ELIG 2017 highlights.
The ELIG Conference Series is moving to Denmark,
recently ranked no. 1 in the European Commission’s
2017 Digital Economy and Society Index. Under the
theme „Hack the Educational Future“, we will cover
latest trends in digitization and cognitive computing.
As you would expect from ELIG, we will do so from a
human-centric, design- and creative perspective with
our local partners Dokk1 and Aarhus University. Mark
your calendars for an inspiring and highly interactive event
in Aarhus: September 28 + 29.
We have also started a new series of ELIG interviews. In
this newsletter the series starts with architect Elisabeth
de Portzamparc, Jan Stahlberg from the danish startup
Labster and Fleur Wirtz who works at the intersection of
arts and digital citizen skills with the Gluon Foundation.
We are also starting a new activity line on „Libraries of
the Future“ in partnership with the Frankfurt Book Fair.
With our best wishes
Elmar Husmann, ELIG Secretary General and the ELIG Team

Hack the Educational Future
Digitization is progressing rapidly. Our digital activities and
data production are growing exponentially. Today, already
90% of the world’s data has been created in only the past
2 years. To make use of these vasts amounts of digital
information, techniques like natural language processing
and deep learning are quickly gaining importance. At the
same time, they are allowing entirely new digital services
and insights, thus paving the way towards a new era of
cognitive computing. Explore with us the impact of this
next wave of digitization on education and learning. And
discuss how we can actively shape it.

Participate in the Making
Deep learning, big data and natural language processing.
VR and next generation storytelling. Design thinking
and phenomenon based learning. We have reversed
the traditional set-up of our conference and let you start
right into practical workshops to gain first-hand maker
experience with these techniques at day 1.

Let‘s Start the Discussion
The Dokk1 Mediaspace – named the
world’s Best Public Library of 2016 and visited by over a 1 Mio people per
year – was already a case at our Paris Conference on
„Learning Places of the Future“. In this year, we will make
use of the exceptional spaces for the plenary day 2 of the
ELIG Conference. Detailed programme and speakers will
be announced soon.

Worth a Visit
Called in 2016 by the New York Times one of the 52
places to visit, we think that Aarhus is even more worth
a visit in this year: as the
European Capital of Culture 2017.
Denmark’s second largest city is a young, vibrant
and creative centre. And home of the country’s largest
university – our partner institution Aarhus University.

The Community Speaks
The ELIG interview series will explore multiple
perspectives from the ELIG Community on future
learning and educational design. It starts with these three
interviews:
Gluon Foundation’s Fleur Wirtz on the intersection of arts
and digital citizen skills for young people.
Edtech entrepreneur Jan Stahlberg on learning in the
virtual environments of Labster.
Architect Elisabeth de Portzamparc talking about her new
university library project in Paris.
