in the name of the ELIG team, we hope that you had a good and productive start into 2016.

We are preparing a range of exciting activities and events for this year about which we will inform
you in the next weeks: the ELIG Conference 2016 in Paris or an Innovation Camp in The Hague
under the Netherlands EU Presidency on Digital Education for an Inclusive Europe for example.
We are also extending our Classroom of the Future in partnership with the Frankfurt Book Fair
towards vocational and professional learning.

As Franz Fehrenbach, former CEO of Bosch, framed it at the ELIG 2015 Conference in Berlin:
"I think that terms like Industrie 4.0 are not the right ones for the disruptive
developments that we see, because we are not talking about industry alone
but about a digitally connected world."

We are all well aware: this digitally connected world will have to face the societal challenges of
today's world: massive youth unemployment, drop-outs from traditional education, integration chal-
lenges of migration, the need for increased societal collaboration and co-creation on a local as well
as wider scale.

Innovation in education and learning will be essential in this transformation. However that needs to
be strongly rooted in our European humanistic traditions and values. This was an essential point of
debate in the ELIG 2015 Conference in Berlin.
I encourage you to revisit the > video recordings from this fascinating debate in Berlin:

Or gain an impression of other ELIG activities via our > bi-annual ELIG report and > photo stream .

I want to close this message, by anouncing a change at the ELIG leadership. Richard Straub
has handed-over his longterm role as Secretary General which I had the pleasure to take over by
appointment of the ELIG Board. Richard will remain an important advisor and mentor to us and we
all at ELIG thank him and his wife Ilse very warmly for all their exceptional personal contributions to
our mission and organisation.

With my best wishes to you for this important new year,

Elmar Husmann
ELIG Secretary General
